چکیده

Reconfigurable control systems are a key enabling technology for autonomous assembly, allowing for a single control system to maintain performance despite large mass property variations that occur from docking and undocking during assembly. There is a wide range of reconfigurable control systems that can be implemented, based on the amount of a priori information known to the designer. The range spans from gain scheduling, where most all the information about the transitions are known, to online system identification, where no information is known. However, little to no techniques currently exist to compare these methods to determine which reconfigurable control system design is the appropriate design for the given assembly scenario. This paper offers two tools to enable the comparison which aids in the selection of a control system for assembly: a set of quantitative metrics and an assembly simulation. Results are presented for sixteen reconfigurable control systems methods and tested on two scenarios, a space telescope and spacecraft self-assembly. Results show a preferred control system method to optimize the performance of the assembly, based on the scenario. The tools and results are integrated in a two phase process that guides engineers to select the appropriate design for autonomous assembly.

SPHERES Reconfigurable Framework and Control System Design for Autonomous Assembly

Abstract: Reconfigurable control system design is a key component for enabling autonomous on-orbit assembly. Current research on reconfigurable control systems focuses on adapting to failures. However, for assembly scenarios, the reconfiguration is necessitated by changing mass and stiffness properties. This paper provides a brief description of existing reconfigurable control system technology...

Scheduling of Multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles for an Assembly Line Using Minimum Cost Network Flow

This paper proposed a parallel automated assembly line system to produce multiple products having multiple autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). Several assembly lines are configured to produce multiple products in which the technologies of machines are shared among the assembly lines when required. The transportation between the stations in an assembly line (intra assembly line) and among station...

Self-assembly in space via self-reconfigurable robots

Self-assembly systems in space are arguably within the reach of today’s technology based on the research and development of self-reconfigurable robots on earth. This paper presents an approach to self-assembly in space by developing (1) a novel design for intelligent and reconfigurable components; (2) the free-flying “intelligent fiber/rope” “match-maker” robots with self-reconfigurable and sel...

Experimaental Evaluation of a Distributed Control System for Chain-type Self-reconfigurable Robots

Self-reconfigurable robots are an instance of complex systems that can autonomously rearrange their modules. Recently, there has been a great interest in using these robots in different domains such as reconnaissance, rescue missions, and space applications for their versatility, fault tolerance, low cost of reproducibility, and efficiency in rough terrains. Because of their distributed nature,...

Autonomous Processes in Assembly Systems

Today’s assembly systems have to be flexible to adapt quickly to an increasing number and variety of products and changing demand volume. To manage these dynamics, flexible, reconfigurable, and autonomous assembly systems were proposed and partly realised in the last two decades. The flexibility and adaptability is realised by clustering the assembly system into subsystems and modules which get...
